My TOP 20 Sulit Christmas Cards

WARNING: Please don't read if you are not ready to see my top 20 which may or may not include your entry.  Please advise me if in case you're entry is in my list and you don't want it to be part of my list so I can pick another one hehe.

The submission of entries for the Sulit Christmas Card-Making Contest officially 12:00 midnight Nov 30.  As of 2:33 pm  today December 1, 2010, there are around 306 official entries but only 20 christmas cards will move on to the next round where Sulit members will get a chance to cast their votes and support their favorite entry or show their support for the member who submitted the entry.  The member who garners the most number of votes shall win the People's Choice Award and brand new  Iphone 3GS.  I have just decided to view all the entries which is already sealed in a .pdf file making it unclickable :-) Since that would take a tremendous amount of time, I might as well come up with my Top 20 Fearless Forecast.  This is just a forecast and does not reflect in any way the outcome of the internal deliberation.

 I'm setting a few guidelines on how I will go about this time-consuming activity:


1.  Check for relevance.  As per admin, relevance to the theme is important, if an entry is not relevant to the theme which is "Pasko 2010: Pasko Ng Pamilyang Pilipino Sa Makabagong Panahon" it will not be scored anymore.  On that note, I will just look for the entries who are most relevant to the theme in my opinion.

2.  Check for originality.  I'll be searching for entries that have original concepts or close to being an original concept lol.

3.  Artwork.  I'm far from being an authority when it comes to viewing artworks. This is 50% of the criteria for judging. Biggest chunk. I'll try to give this a good deal of importance.


4.  Textual Content. I'm going to look for messages that are unique and I have never seen before and that are also appealing to someone who might read it. This constitutes 20% of the final score.

5. Presentation. Not really sure what this is. But I'm assuming that if an entry looks too busy that is not good presentation.  If the concept is too vague or hard to grasp, that is not good presentation.

These are all criteria for judging by the way.


This is going to be one hell of a work hehe.  To those who will not make it to my list,  this is just my own Top 20 list so don't you worry. You still have a good chance of making it to the top 20 as taste is quite subjective.


I believe I can come up with an impartial list since I really don't owe anyone any favor but again this is just my personal top 20.  Everyone is free to come up with their own set.



I'm going to open each entry to give it a quick glance, if I like it, I'll open another tab in another browser so I can take a second look later when I pick my top 20. This is my own way of doing an initial screening.This step is going to be based more on what I think looks great as a card with less emphasis on other factors so I can come up with more entries to choose from.

I'm not going to talk about my entry anymore in this blog since this blog site is already all about my entry. So my entry is Top 0. #0 in the list.

There's a reason a contest has a set of mechanics. So the entries that I thought had stick to the rules and interpreted the theme better than the others (in my own opinion only) got my thumbs up.


THE THEME AGAIN OF THE CONTEST IS PASKO 2010: PASKO NG PAMILYANG PILIPINO SA MAKABAGONG PANAHON.

Other important considerations as per contest mechanics:


•    File formats allowed: .jpg, .bmp, .png., .gif

 As much as I would like to include some entries in my list because they are so cute in other file versions (animation), in the spirit of fair play and playing accoding to the rules, I only took into consideration the card version which is in the allowed file formats :-)


Note that we are looking for an official Christmas card to be printed out and be sent to our members...

This one has been specially mentioned in the mechanics, so the first thing that comes to my mind is simplicity,elegance, elaborate but not messy meaning looks pleasant, representative of Sulit as a corporate entity.


Change of Plan.

Instead of keeping the ones that I like open in browser tab so I can copy the URL later, I decided to just download the images since it's quite tedious and eats precious CPU memory lol.  And it is really getting a bit tiresome as well. Sorry if I would not be including the URLs of my chosen top 20. But if you want just say so, but  link mine in your blog too please? hehe.



I noticed some trending concepts: the use of christmas tree and the sun insignia of the Philippine flag. I'd like to ask why, but I kinda already know the answer to that question :-) 

I think a lot of Sulit members is quite nationalistic too lol,

The theme is quite really hard to interpet honeslty specially if you don't have the skills or artistic sense that's why I personally could come up with a single entry, I had a concept in mind but didn't have the materials to do so. That is why I say, kudos to those who have made more than one but with different concepts.

It came across my mind suddenly, that this would also serve a purpose to those who will not make it to my top 20 list: it will let them see some competition.

Special mention to this entry because it woke me up when I was about to fall asleep doing this:

 I need to finish this work before the admin does otherwise, this is really pointless hehe. Thanks to ENTRY 234 it made me laugh because I thought I was quite slow in getting what the messages written across the card meant.


My biggest dilemma when I was still thinking of creating my card is that I really cannot draw so I have to work with images that I believe are already public domain and will not encroach on copyright infringement. (This might stir up a lengthy discussion or debate so I will stay away from this subject matter). With that in mind, I thought that even without using people or family photos or images in the card, one could still make an entry relevant to the theme with the help of text and proper choice of elements.  So the real question is: Will  the textual content or the choice of elements be really enough to make an entry relevant?  If these are enough basis, then what are the odds of winning against entries that look relevant from composition to textual content since voting result also has a certain percentage that could really sway the final result of this competition.

That we will have to see after the winners have been announced lol.

This blog is slowly becoming a real blog.


 I have just finished downloading the ones that had the most visual impact on me, and I did that with a lot of consideration regarding the contest mechanics. I actually saved around 69 images (that's what it says in the folder's properties) but  I need to show only 20 otherwise this wouldn't be My Top 20 Sulit Christmas Cards.


It is so hard to decide on the Top 20 because there are just too many nice-looking cards. I chose entries that looks unique to me also aside from those who I felt were most relevant to the theme. I also tried to think what would I do if I were one of the judges, what would I want to print and send out to people.  I chose the ones to me would have a general appeal. As textual content is 15% I did not select the ones  that look good but did not bother to put textual content aside from again the theme and the required caption. And lastly, I decided to pick representative of several card concept categories that became apparent as I went from one entry to the next.

Again this is just my TOP 20 list. Feel free to make your own if you don't like what you see in here hehe.  To each his own.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER OF PREFERENCE. THESE ARE MY TOP 20 SULIT CHRISTMAS CARDS.

 

I chose this card among so many card entries with christmas trees and many cartoon images of people because it still feels like christmas and not fiesta or gearing up for a trip or vacation.

I chose this card because it's the one card that I saved which depicts charity or generosity.

This is one card that doesn't really wanna make me question the nationality of the family so much (although if the lines in lieu of eyes are made a little longer, they are all going to look like "singkit" na hehe) and it looks cute too.

I chose this card because it has some magic moments and real people with good photography.  Among all entries with photography this stood out.

This card looks more like an ad but nice concept and  a nice work so good job.

  

Something about this card that made me think twice before taking it off my list.  I think the hugging part made me keep it.  You feel the warm hehe.

I like this card because it looks like a child painting, not so much the S on all the sides (which can be easily taken care of) but plus points for being hand drawn. There are other hand-drawn entries but I chose this one. Again matter of taste.

I like this card because it looks great and the animation is nice.  Looks hand-drawn also. Looks like real old paper too.

I'm not really into the cute clip art looking people but this entry is cute and I think on its category among so many others, this one stood out for me,

I like this card because it looks like it's hand-drawn also. Reminds me of Simbang Gabi even if I don't see any actual church. 

I like this card for it's visual impact it catches your attention. I allowed the trees so I'm allowing the Parol.

 

One of the nationalistic cards, but still subtle at that and looks global pinoy. Didn't do it for me at first because I didn't see the Christmas elements right away, but after I saw what I was looking for, I said ok.

Personally I don't like velvet but color is something that can be changed if needed and there's something with this card that will make you look again. Still looks pinoy even if it is cartoon.

 

I'm not so much into the nationalistic cards but the artwork of this card caught my attention too. I chose this because I don't see the Philippine flag or the nationalism is subtle. So I hope this would represent the population of the nationalistic Christmas cards :-)

 

I couldn't save the animated version of this card but it looks like a real christmas card to me.  I like the placement of the square outlines,another breakaway from the clip arts.

 

I chose this card because it made me look twice also. Now I'm looking again. It tricks my eyes.

 

There's something about the use of text in this card that makes it stand out among all the others who did the same.

I like the use of colors also in this card, although I don't personally like the use of color black  for a christmas card but this looks nice to me and the blacks did not become so prominent because of the colors.

 

Another Christmas tree entry that I will allow in my Top 20 because there are just so many christmas tree entries central to the card concept so this hopefully will represent their population.

As the title of my blog clearly tells, this is going to be some sort of a beginner’s guide or a survival kit and a review of some sort. You don’t even have to know about what it is doing just follow thru the links and prompts and you are all set when submitting your shop to Google. But of course, you need to have a google account. Sulit Currency. This is so uniquely Sulit.com.ph. Need I say more? In short this is something that you can use to prioritize your ad or upgrade your account for better Sulit experience and use other special website features. There are two types of sulit currencies SG (Sulit Gold) and SC (Sulit Currency). Some activities that you do online or offline Sulit.com.ph can help you earn the basic Sulit Currency (SC). (e.g reading newsletter from sulit, just read the newsletter and click on the link below the email to claim your SC, posting topics in the forum or simply making a reply to a topic or getting replies, inviting friends to join , so on and so forth). Guaranteed Ad Viewership - There’s no such thing as zero views in Sulit.com.ph unless your ad is freshly created. Depending on your ad and how it is prioritized, how you composed your ads ( I made another simple blog that is related to this here) and other factors in consideration, you are going to get some inquiries guaranteed! There’s never an ad that I posted in Sulit.com.ph that did not get an inquiry in the last four years that I have been going back and forth this website to sell or look for something that I require. The power rests in your hands :-) If you are wondering what a Sulitizen is, search the web, you’ll be surprised that there are countless definitions out there *wink*wink.

Social Networking/Community Forums. There are countless members of Sulit.com.ph that like expressing their views online in the community forum and I have seen people make friends or earn friends by doing so, you can also actually add members to your own buddy list and manage it. You can also monitor their online activities and other member’s as well. Viewing other member's online activities is a start when you’re trying to make a background check. If you are a little antisocial (just kidding) and a member got you irked, you can simply block him or her. Cool right? Yahoo messenger is also integrated so you know when a member’s online in YM and you can message him or her there for a quick chat. And at the end of this blog if you find it really helpful, you can send me a thank you note by clicking here or simply Like it and share it with your friends in Facebook (news about this update reached me courtesy of Ms Purr). A simple thank you to a great post can help you gain friends online.

Fast And Easy Searching. Search options enables one to filter the results for fast searching. I usually filter my search results by relevance, price, location and date. This really really comes in handy when you are looking for something to buy, like when I was looking for a used airconditioner (I have somewhat busted my mouse clicking Search and Search options and it paid off btw.  I got one from a fellow Sulit member recently less than a month ago I guess and it’s really really sulit!! 4k only for a one year old 1HP Samsung aircon and it’s in excellent condition, although I had to spend another 500 to bribe my friend and another 200 for gasoline so he would drive me all the way to Binan,Laguna from Paranaque and from Paranaque to Manila where I live). One thing that I also like is that if you are not using your own computer, you can actually save ads to your account (mentioned this already), or write down their ad ids and just search for them later on. By the way, if you want to include advertisements that have already expired or placed in the archive, which you would normally want omitted from your search results, you can include them now also in the search options.

(My newly owned pre-owned 1 HP Samsung Aircon I scored it at a really bargain price of 4,000php)

Feedback/Feedback Resolution/Seller Verification. If you are crazy about feedbacks and doing your own little background check before you proceed with any transaction, it’s also here.  And talking about background checks, if you are going to transact business with Sulit.com.ph as an advertiser, no worries, it is a completely legitimate entity, I can personally attest to that, I’ve been in their office located at the 24th floor of Union Bank Plaza along Meralco Ave, in Ortigas Pasig. I also just found out about this Sure Seal. Sulit.com.ph is Sure Seal certified. If you want to find out more about Sure Seal check their website here.  One great news: Sulit members could avail significant discount from Sure Seal.  As a seller it's a major plus if you could get yourself verified!

Another good thing about Sulit.com.ph is the way feedbacks are resolved in a timely and diplomatic manner.  Member's reported for a violation can fix a simple violation reported even before admin intervention.  A new member like you will sooner or later learn more about it.

Anti-scammer And Anti-Spammer. Oh you bet, you have it here. These scammers are popularized in the forums and you can even report them. Sulit has a reporting tool and adequate feedback channel that you can use against these scammers. People work hard for their money, and people with real bad intentions to steal this hard-earned money by fraud or trickery don’t have a place among members of Sulit.com.ph. Report that scammer right away!!!! Report spammers also if you think it's doing too much invading your privacy but be very courteous, you don't want frenemies or enemies :-) I don't mind spammers that much but scammers are just disgusting :-). I have never been personally a victim of a scammer before and I hope it stays that way. My advise is, if you think it is too good to be true, it probably is. Or don’t put yourself in a situation where you could not say no, always be mindful when sending money to strangers. I am not a fan of sending any money to a person prior to receiving the goods, in almost all of my past transactions online, I always transact on COD basis but there’s always an exception if there’s a really really good reason and proof that I could do so without having any fear of wasting my money to online fraud. Tip: Deposit your payment thru bank, it’s much easier to trace but take note of member’s feedback and prior online activities first. No feedback is probably not good in a transaction where meet-ups or CODs would seem impossible. I don’t really care much about feedback myself since I always do COD or transact on a meet-up basis but that is just me. Feedback Badge. There’s a good reason why you shouldn’t become like me when it comes to wanting a good feedback. Just now, while I was checking the site, they have added a new feature. Post Unlimited Free Ads and Automated Advertisement Analysis. Almost missed this one. You can post unlimited number of free ads as long as they are not duplicate ads.  Sulit is your online classified ads where you don't even have to shell out a single cent and still generate money.  But there's a huge advantage and benefits of course for paid ads.  On top of this Sulit has also recently added an automated advertisement analysis, a feature that gives you some useful suggestions on how to increase traffic for your ad in just a click of the mouse. Other Things In Store For You.  Yes there are other things in store for you that I couldn't possibly discuss here.

After you have registered or log in to your Sulit account, it normally takes you to your dashboard.  What is a dashboard?

Posting in the innermost and correct category will give your advertisement the highest exposure. Advertisement posted in a subcategory is still displayed in the parent category.

One Final and Very Important Tip: Make sure you log out! You don't want other people messing around with your account and spending your SC or SG or making serious violations on your behalf. Your account is still your responsibility.  Don't tick the Remember Me check box when you log in to Sulit unless you are using your own private computer.

Sulit is a place where a dreamer could expect something great to happen and with some amount of effort, determination and hard work he or she could one day get something really big. But is also a place for everyone who doesn’t really have anything big going on in his or her head but wants something however little or small it is, done and gets it done. I am one of those people out the thousands and thousands members of Sulit.com.ph who visit the website every time they need to sell or buy a thing or two. This relationship that I have with Sulit.com.ph started way back in 2006 when the website is just freshly baked from the oven and I happened to be starting out as a real estate agent. I remember the first project that I advertised in Sulit.com.ph was the Fountain Breeze Project in Paranaque using a username which login details I have already forgotten.  Even at its early stages, Sulit.com.ph delivered all the inquiries that I needed being one of the early pioneers in online classifieds in the Philippines.

To wrap this up, I'd like to share a little something that I wrote about Sulit.com.ph in the recent past that might also help give you more idea with regards to the website and it's membership.

Sulitizens as Netizens.

The Unfriendly Ad. Your Sulit Online Experience Can Be A Learning Process With A Little Bit Of Fun

(Disclaimer: I don’t possess the expertise per se to tackle this subject matter and that most of the proceeding content of this blog is based on personal observations alone)



People who post their ads online, especially those who are not marketing or communications savvy have the tendency sometimes to create ads that are seemingly unfriendly. I have realized this just recently when we were looking for a room tenant. After a month, we were able to successfully find a tenant not from walk-ins that we also had had but from my http://www.sulit.com.ph advertisement. Take note however that I did get inquiries once in a while within that period but the task of getting a room tenant sped up after I made some necessary changes in my ad.



What made me come up of this blog? Ideally, if you want more inquiries or potential clients, you would post your ad in several different websites, but there’s a rather disturbing incident that made me stop and consider for a minute why did I even get that. So perhaps I thought that my ad is a little unfriendly and because of that, here I am listing down random thoughts on what makes an Unfriendly Ad.





1. Too much information. Providing detailed information is good, it really is but when it is too much, it might backfire on you. My mistake is that, in my intent to avoid unnecessary inquiries, I outlined even the terms and conditions of the contract. But I think some people thought that it was just too much especially when they haven’t really seen the room. There were times when I thought about modifying my ad which I eventually did because of too little inquiries and I took out around 60% of what I originally wrote and just like that I got an inquiry from someone who is keen on seeing the room right away. ( I also encountered ads with heavy information with online money making scheme or scam lol explaining this and that but is not hitting the right pocket which is how am I suppose to earn money from this and what are the real things at stake. In fairness to them, all will be revealed after several redirections or opening several webpage.)

2. Use of tone that is not appealing to your target market and vice-versa (appealing to other market). I was actually a little proud of myself after I finished writing my ad, I thought that for what its worth, it’s well written and sounds very realistic, professional and intelligent and so, here comes the Chinese businessman (at least that is what he claims he is). I was actually hesitant at first to entertain this guy not because he is Chinese, but because of the nature of his stay in the Philippines and the speed at which he would respond to my sms which was really dragging or delayed than what a usual sms exchange involving transactions should be. We have a really modest house and really small one and I have this mentioned in my ad and perhaps this Chinese guy skipped that part (could be language barrier because he’s really having difficulty with written or verabal english) So he came and checked out the room, I would swear that if he was indeed a businessman looking for potential investment in the Philippines our house would easily turn him off lol.  And of course, I was right!!! He never came back :-)

All I’m trying to say is (after a lengthy story), I was not expecting someone of such background to rent a room in our house. I could absolutely be wrong, but I know that the way I have written my ad really did have a factor in attracting Mr. Chinese Businessman.



3. Ghastly presentation. An ad that is not presented well and looks crappy in terms of the overall appearance and ads that go without pictures isn’t really going to sell as fast as you thought it would. It will still get noticed though, but we all know that what is pleasant to the eyes seems easy on the pocket. The photos of our newly painted room really did help a lot. The green and white shades of the room is easy in the eyes I think that really is a plus if someone would want to get his eyes rested after a tiring day outside. And speaking of colors, I by the way think that colorful texts in some ads that scream so loud it shuts my eyes close in an instant is very kindergarten thing to do lol. Right? Right? (Eyes rolling scanning the room full of readers looking for nods or thumbs up hehe)

4. Where again is your ad? Ad placement has great importance because if your ad is in the bottom of the pit then how are people going to find it or rather when is your ad going to appear under the search results. My ad having no priority whatsoever also suffered low viewing rate. So if you have an ad in Sulit.com.ph, use that Sulit points you have  My personal account in Suli.com.ph is relatively new, not much points to spend but I can clearly see now the value and worth of every sulit points. And in case you are wondering why is this even listed here, think of the number of days people would keep searching and searching until they find your ad which is really the one they are looking for and it just so happens that yours is stuck in the deepest pages waiting for the expiry date haha. Btw, if this ever happens to you, I mean your item or ad seeing no movement whatsoever, then it is time to revisit and re-evaluate your options you might be doing something that is not right.



5. Finding difficulty in striking a balance between being honest or transparent and withholding relevant information or soon-to-be relevant information once the transaction proceeds. Now you see, we have two dogs Moises and Noah that are noisy as hell and fierce as hellhounds when seeing strangers step inside the house. Our potential tenants would have to walk past them within arms length every day for the entire duration of their stay. Although both are securely tied to their places, some people have had dog trauma in their childhood so this is definitely a no no for them and for us since I also don’t want to spend everyday making guarantees that they won’t get bitten lol. So I decided to put this information in my ad as well. In the long run, I removed this information and just left the photos of the dogs in my ad. Maybe a lot got scared but all is well that ends well, the room is occupied.

6. Your listed price is unbelievable. One thing to remember if you want to get your item sold or your ad viewed is too make sure that your listed price is within fair market value. What I did is that I looked and searched for other rooms that are being rented out within our vicinity to compare with the prevailing room rental fees around and slashed a few hundred bucks to make it more affordable and removed some room features. In the end however, I still got the rental fee I’m aiming for with the original room package I posted, how did it happen? Because I made them see the value being added is fair and just. Also if your potential clients have money, they really have money if they don’t have money then either you settle with them or let them find something else that fits their budget. The important things is that you have been reasonable in terms of price.



7. Nasty comments from Mr and Ms Anonymous. This is what inspired me to write this blog. I did mention that I post the same ad on a different website. Apparently the other website allowed anonymous comments. I’m not going to repost the comments made here since I instantly removed it after I got notified. The bashing was unfair and moronic considering that Mr or Ms Anonymous did not even talk to me thru phone or thru sms or did not even visit, inspect or check the room and thinks that the terms and conditions are outrageous.  As far as I can remember, he or she used the words "scammer" and "masungit" referring to the ad owner which is me to think that I never got any inquiry yet at that point in time. To you Mr and Ms anonymous, let me tell you this, I would feed you to my dogs in a blink of an eye without having any signs of remorse afterward lol (I’m just kidding, peace on earth , peach on earth). Lesson learned: Choose a website where people cannot just make anonymous comments like the other website with url starting with the letter o then l, the rest go figure it out.  I'm glad Sulit.com.ph requires logging in before you can make any public comment.  Don’t we all hate it when people make negative comments with possible impact on our ads without our chance to retaliate lol , I mean discuss it diplomatically? Or sue his or her ass off ? Ooops I almost forgot, your ad isn’t really very friendly anymore if you have world war 3 going on under the comments section 



8. Pick your words or choose a language in which the response that you’d get would not blow you off the face of planet earth. I’m not a grammarian, neither do I hunt errors in grammar and composition for a living, but a message that is ill-composed with grammatical errors considering it is just one or two sentences long is sometimes dreadful. Like I said, the ad that I placed was generally well-written that I think it made some impression regarding me as the ad owner. So I got several sms that really made my day (I tried searching for the message btw but I already cleaned up my inbox). Bottomline: If you can make things a lot easier for your target audience, do it or face the consequences haha. Not that it matters to everyone, but some people do appreciate things like this. Be more “language-friendly” (???? huh??? hehe).

9. Sorry po, wala po ako sun eh. I got this message since I only posted my Sun number. ( When I get an inquiry using other networks, I use my other phones) An ad that has only one contact number or just an email address is ok, but if you have multiple numbers please post it!!!  Some people are too conscious with their sms spending and not that they don’t like what they see in your ad, if they don’t have a credit to send text to your network then you miss-out this one potential buyer ( I’m guilty here too hehe). Besides, more contact numbers are really better for obvious reasons. But if you want to avoid people who save every peso that they can or for whatever reason you may have, then by all means just stick to one contact number. But you gotta give it to me I have style!!! (Echosero daw ako  )

10. Your ad could become unfriendly to you too you know. If you have accomplished your goal with your online ad please remove it. It’s common mistake for a lot of people not to remove their ads like me, so I have been getting inquiries even after the room has been taken (I already removed my ad btw weeks and weeks ago). I also don’t like throwing inquiries on people who forget to remove their ads after their items got sold. And since Sulit.com.ph has tremendous online readership/viewership it would really be wise to remove that ad if you don't want to receive sms anymore or to avoid becoming impolite by not sending a reply. Doing so at the same time helps conserve disk space




These are just a few of the things that I learned and observed from my room rental ad and hopefully some people who are already aware of all these things would take some time to re-learn or reconsider. Our room is occupied until December 2010 thanks to Sulit.com.ph. I posted the same ad in several different websites but the one that really brought in the tenant is Sulit.com.ph. However we all should be reminded that however great place Sulit.com.ph is for our ads, we all have got to do our part to make things a lot effective and friendlier for everyone
